As of late 2024 and early 2025, Air Selangor offers water usage monitoring through its mobile app, but it is not a traditional real-time tracking service that shows minute-by-minute consumption. Instead, it provides a feature that tracks and displays your average daily water usage based on your billed meter readings. This monitoring tool helps you manage consumption and detect potential leaks.
How the Air Selangor monitoring feature works
- Mobile App Feature: The company's enhanced "Lifestyle Application," or Air Selangor 2.0, includes a Litres per Capita per Day (LCD) Tracker.
- Calculation Method: The app calculates your average daily usage per person based on your most recent monthly meter reading and the number of people you enter for your household.
- Goal Tracking: You can use the LCD tracker to compare your average daily usage against the National Water Services Commission's (SPAN) recommended target of 160 litres per person per day.
- Leak Detection: The app also includes interactive guides and features that can help you diagnose and reduce water waste, such as identifying home water leaks.
Shift towards smart meters
For more precise and potentially near-real-time data, Air Selangor has been implementing an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) or smart meter program.
- Remote Readings: Smart meters are digital devices that use wireless technology to automatically record and transmit water consumption data. This provides more frequent and accurate readings than the traditional monthly manual reading.
- Leak Notifications: When fully implemented, this technology can notify customers of a drastic or unusual increase in usage, which often indicates an internal leak.
- Progressive Rollout: Air Selangor has been progressively replacing older meters with these smart meters in selected areas. It is not yet available to all households, but you will be notified before your meter is replaced.
